This is held once a year to Support our green belt along the length of the Braamfontein Spruit. Field & Study Park is the biggest area along it and is the most priceless green lung so close to our Sandton CBD.
Friends of Field & Study – FOFS – our motto is “To protect, promote and preserve “ the Park – and we have been doing this for almost 10 years now.
Although the day was promoted by the Parkmore Resident’s Assoc. it is very disappointing to see just how few really care enough to come out and “do their bit” for the Park. We always need help. Had it not been for Julien Ortlepp, Chairman of the PCA with his truck and workers and a truck and team from Parks Depot 406 to plant the 20 trees we had dug the holes for, as well as a tanker to water them, we would have been lost.
We oiled the Jungle Gym, installed two new swing dustbins, painted the car and metal picnic table, did a river clean up and picked up litter. Today – Mon. 21st Parks have dug a further 23 holes and will be planting the new trees tomorrow. Thank you JCPZ Depot 406 for your support, to Handri Coelen who paid to have the electricity supply restored and secured for her forthcoming Market in the Park on the 26th and Katja Fulton who paid to have steel mesh welded to the top of the Dinosaur with hand bars to make it safer. We thank them for their commitment to the Park. True residents of River Club who care to give back to the Park.
We also thank Montrose Nursery in Morningside who donated compost and bone meal for the trees and Morningside Mica, Parkmore who donated half of the linseed oil and turps for the Jungle Gym. Thank you Pick’nPay who donated the two new dustbins. As an NGO we are grateful for any donations we can get as it costs to keep the Park looking good and to maintain the play equipment.
The Dinosaur will be painted next month by IQ Business who have adopted Dino. This will be the third time they have come. Thank you IQ Business!! By the end of Oct. everything will have had a new coat of paint for summer.
In all SPRUIT DAY cost FOFS just over R2000 to pay for the labour and materials used. Paint and wood are SO expensive! We appeal for more like IQ Business who see the value of this green oasis in the midst of the frenetic lives we live in this every densifying Sandton.
To companies and those who use the Park, join FOFS as a member or join our committee. Make a donation. It all there on the website. We need to treasure this green space!
